This is a glossary of tools recommended for basic automobile repairs:

Combination wrench set - a variety of open-ended wrenches in metric or standard sizes depending on your vehicle.

Adjustable wrench - wrench, which is adjustable to different sized nuts and bolts.

Spark plug - wrench with rubber insert: a socket used to install and remove automotive spark plugs.

Spark plug gap adjusting tool - small tool used for adjusting the gap, or spark setting on an automotive spark plug. Gap tool is round wires of precise diameters is used to measure the gap;

Feeler gauge set - A blade, usually metal, of precisely predetermined thickness, used to measure the clearance between two pads.

Brake bleeder wrench - Brake bleeding is the procedure performed on hydraulic brake systems where the brake lines (pipes and hoses containing the brake fluid) are purged of any air bubbles. This is necessary because, while the brake fluid is an incompressible liquid, air bubbles are a compressible gas and their presence in the brake system dangerously reduces the hydraulic pressure that can be developed within the system.

Standard screwdriver - large and small versions of the flat head screwdriver for driving flat head screws.

Phillips screwdriver - screwdriver for use with Phillips screws

Combination pliers - is a hand tool, designed primarily for gripping objects by using leverage. Pliers are designed for numerous purposes and require different jaw configurations to grip, turn, pull, or crimp a variety of things. They are a tool common to many trades and occupations. Many types of pliers also include jaws for cutting wires.

Hacksaw - A saw consisting of a tough, fine-toothed blade stretched taut in a frame used for cutting metal.

Tire Pressure Gauge - is a pressure gauge used to measure the pressure of tires on a vehicle. Since tires are rated for specific loads at certain pressure, it is important to keep the pressure of the tire at the correct pressure. Tires are rated for their optimal pressure when cold, meaning before the tire has been driven on for the day and heated up, which ultimately changes the internal pressure of the tire due to the expansion of gasses.

Grease gun - A hand-powered pumps used to force grease under pressure into bearings.

Oil Can - used for applying oil.

Fine Emery cloth - used for cleaning metal surfaces.

Wire brush - used for cleaning metal parts.

Battery posts cable - cleaning tool-device used to clean the battery terminals with wire brushes, cleaning battery acid corrosion.

Oil Filter wrench - used for removing or replacing the Oil Filter.

Funnel - used for adding oil to the motor.

Safety Goggles - eye protection

Jack Stands - used for supporting the automobile for safety.

Drain Pan - a plastic or metal pan used for draining used oil for oil changes.
